Designed originally as staff quarters, a twelve-horse stables in the “big thicket” of Athens, Texas, segues into an idyllic retreat built for the family’s three girls. A high-pitched farmhouse roof and classic East Coast cupolas bathe the living area in natural light, evoking a soft, storybook quality and recalling classical American elements of the 1940s. Pullman-style bunks. Gingerbread railing. Exquisite millwork rendered completely in white oak, coating the home with fresh warmth from baseboard to beam, while allowing other storied details––a display of vintage iron chairs, fine art, a leather powder room wall––space to make themselves known.
